OpenAI sees a clear path to superintelligence

Many in the Vitalism community (👆🏼) are skeptical about placing too much trust in artificial intelligence. They acknowledge AI's potential but caution against overreliance.

I agree. If I believed that superintelligent systems would solve all our problems within a decade, I wouldn't be doing this.

However, my perspective as a tech reporter for Ny Teknik, where I cover AI, makes me more optimistic than the average Vitalist. Recent developments have reinforced this optimism. OpenAI, one of the largest AI companies globally, is now saying out loud that deep learning models are on track to achieve general intelligence, asserting that no unforeseen barriers (‘unknown unknowns’) are likely to emerge, although far from everyone agrees with this assessment.

The assumption is that superintelligence will quickly follow, transforming capabilities at a pace and scale beyond human limits. Superintelligence would not be constrained by the biological timescales that limit human cognition; it would operate - or ”think” - many orders of magnitude faster than us, a concept you might already grasp if you’ve ever used a pocket calculator or a modern chatbot.
